How to work remotely? There are many reasons why people might want to work remotely, and there are a lot of ways to make it happen.

People who work remotely are sometimes called ‘digital nomads’. The term was coined by Eric Zimmermann, a French Canadian who worked from various locations in the world as a web developer and entrepreneur for over 15 years. In 2003 he moved to Thailand and began traveling full time for adventure travel, teaching yoga and meditation along the way.

Three years ago I started a blog about working remotely, and it got a lot of attention. However, I found that most people who tried to work remotely failed, and my blog wasn’t helping.

There are many ways to work remotely, and you can choose a combination of approaches. This article will look at the approaches in turn. I won’t cover everything about each approach, but the links will lead to more information on each topic, and some are relatively self-explanatory anyway.

Here’s a summary of the four main approaches to remote work:

(1) A remote-working specialist (e.g. a ‘digital nomad’) may be a freelancer or a consultant who works remotely full-time.

(2) People sometimes work remotely temporarily, for example when they are on parental or sick leave. Temporary remote working is sometimes called ‘work from home’ (WFH).

(3) Some employees want to work part-time remotely, especially in an office where flexible working is possible. If the employee works remotely part-time for a few days a week and comes into office the remaining days, this form of remoting is sometimes called ‘semi-permanent telecommuting’ or ‘telecommuting 2 days a week’.

(4) The fourth approach is ‘remote working’ yourself. This can be either part-time or full-time. As well as the work that can be done remotely, there are many things that only remote workers can do.
